As you may be aware this continued thought that to succeed today you need to be giving away all your music I feel is WRONG!. However I have to admit that the more musicians do this the harder it gets to be able to sell your own albums. So what to do?
Well I had the answer to this problem and didn't realize it in "Start a Video Strategy". Get someone to your shows with a video camera, and record your live shows. Make sure to show the fun your fans are having at these shows, and the energy you pull off on stage. Maybe even let your fans know that you will edit together any all submissions of your shows. Of course now there is even more reason to explode your videos online since you are now giving them away for free anyways.
These are then the music you can give away. Eventually you will be able to have 2 free DVDs at each show to give away. Great addition to your Merchandise table and entice people to see what else you have for sale such as your actual album. This is how you can be giving away your music at your live shows and still sell your album to your true fans willing to pay, maybe experiment with the set-your price theory to see if it works for you?
Now this is not to say that you should fight he inevitable release of your music via P2P. As your fans find where it is for free let them tell others. This can only build your fan base. Put your songs for sale and focus on letting your fans know right away where they can buy it.
